This was the second lighthouse in South Africa. Completed in 1842, it operated until 1908 when the Table Bay Harbour's breakwater light rendered it obsolete. This is also the site of the old Mouille Point Battery which protected the Granger Bay anchorage in the 18th century. The name 'mouille' comes from the French for anchorage or mooring.
